Thanthwe Enterprises
Description
Thanthwe Enterprises is an innovative agribusiness that uses an integrated agricultural approach, which combines horticulture, agro-processing, and community outreach services. Its vegetables and processed products are sold to hotels, supermarkets, and individuals in Lilongwe. Thanthwe envisions a fresh produce importation-free Malawi that can produce and export high-quality horticultural products.
Market Opportunity/ Problem
The herbal product value chain in Malawi remains underdeveloped. The motivation to cultivate the herbs and spices at a largescale is hindered by the lack of processing facilities that would be off-takers from the smallholder farmers and suppliers for the local and regional markets. Thanthwe has grown and processed hibiscus into herbal tea, Juice, and Jam for the past five years. Thanthwe plans to expand its hibiscus production and processing, thus increasing the supply of semi-processed and processed herbal teas, jam, and juice products, resulting in substitution for imported herbal teas, backup, and juice in the Malawian market and increasing export of the same.
