Description

Nuts for Growth is Ghana’s premier traders and processors of shea nuts and soya beans.

Market Opportunity/ Problem

Demand for shea butter and its derivatives is thriving (>7% YoY) due to demand mainly from the confectionary and cosmetics industries (worth >$422B combined). This demand is set to grow further as the natural hair care movement grows, with further applications for shea derivatives recently discovered in the bakery sector. Shea’s unique properties as a tree crop native to West Africa means that countries in the sub-region have a distinct supply advantage. Despite this advantage, most processing and value capture in the sector is abroad. There is an opportunity for the well-organized processing of shea butter locally. Ghana is a particularly promising market, given high levels of existing value chain organization and consistently higher quality of shea nut kernels. Local processing in Ghana provides production advantages due to significant logistical savings and benefits of the local organization and streamlining of the shea value chain
