Description

MakolaHub.com is an app for small farmers to connect with suppliers in larger cities. It simplifies procurement of farming equipment, agrochemicals, and other farm necessities, which are not available in rural communities. Farmers can also ‘post/share’ their products to attract new buyers.

Market Opportunity/ Problem

Because of not knowing where to look, thousands of smallholder farmers across Africa struggle to procure the best equipment, newest agrochemicals, and critical farming tools. Hiring a truck to deliver equipment from hundreds of miles away is costly and inefficient for a small farmer. The hub-and-spoke model will connect cities to each other, so buyers and sellers do not have to worry about delivery. Moreover, annual post-harvest losses are estimated at over one billion metric tonnes. This is because small farmers and local buyers have no way to connect with each other easily. The current sales model for small farmers is centered around intermediaries, who offer low prices and are too small to buy all the products on a farm. MakolaHub.com is designed to be a ‘hub’ where buyers and sellers come together to do business.
