Description

Kajikhomele Foundation Limited (KFL) has investments in the transportation and agro-processing sectors. It has a US$380,000 rice value chain business and has set up the second-biggest rice milling, and processing plant in Malawi and is focused on Karonga produced fragrant Kilombero rice. With its partner CADECM, KFL is supporting over 2500 smallholder farmers in rice production.

Market Opportunity/ Problem

Karonga Kilombero rice is highly fragrant and nutritious and is largely produced by smallholder farmers. These farmers however lack pure Kilombero seeds, proper agronomy practices and more importantly, a profitable market for their produce. KFL’s investment in the value chain focuses on increasing supply of the fragrant Karonga Kilombero Rice on national and international markets offering smallholder farmers easy access to a profitable market and addressing farmer production inefficiencies and losses in rice handling
