Dokolo Young Oilseed Farmers’ Cooperative
Description
The cooperative was formed to provide a good market structure for the young people through joint bulking/ aggregation of oilseeds, provision of foundation and quality seeds through an established network of local seed business, provision of agro-input, access to credit, agro insurances, extension, and plowing/tractor services.
Market Opportunity/ Problem
Uganda’s demand for vegetable oilseed is high, following increased global demand for vegetable oil and animal feeds (seed cake) over the years. Uganda still imports most of its vegetable oil which leads to forex loss. However, local processing in the northern region has increased, thereby presenting an opportunity for import substitution and presenting market opportunities for organized farmer-owned agribusinesses.
